Heavy Fuel Oil: what to know
- Marine grades are defined in ISO 8217 (for example RMG 380 / IFO 380 and IFO 180)
- Viscosity is quoted at 50°C in centistokes
- Sulphur content is regulated: ships must use 0.50% fuel or fit scrubbers under IMO 2020
- Must be stored and transferred hot, with centrifuging before use on ships
- Independent inspectors test density, viscosity, sulphur and water at loading and discharge
Tokenization and tracking
Heavy fuel oil is part of the PEG product range. For the live token programme see Products; EN590 diesel is Phase 1.
Heavy Fuel Oil in Singapore
Singapore has large HFO and fuel oil storage and blending capacity used for marine bunkering and regional power and industry. More on Singapore.
Heavy Fuel Oil in Switzerland
Demand for HFO in Europe is limited, but Swiss-based traders and banks regularly finance fuel oil cargoes loaded in the Mediterranean, Middle East and Asia. More on Switzerland.
Frequently asked questions
What is IFO 380?
Intermediate fuel oil with a maximum viscosity of 380 centistokes at 50°C, a common marine residual fuel grade.
Is HFO still allowed on ships?
Yes, if the ship has an approved exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber) or if the fuel meets the applicable sulphur limit.
